Be a Thinker, Not a Stinker at the Gym!

Summertime is here! Temperatures are at record highs…Again! Don’t let the heat beat you! Let’s practice some common courtesy to respect yourself and other gymgoers.

I had the unfortunate experience recently to share the gym with a young person who didn’t practice proper hygiene. No one wants to be that person at the gym. Practicing good hygiene isn’t just about smelling fresh, it’s also a sign of respect for yourself and everyone else grinding it out nearby. Here’s a solid game plan to stay clean, confident, and contagion-free:

🧼 Pre-Workout Prep

  • Shower before the gym: Especially if it’s been a long day. A quick rinse removes bacteria that can mix with sweat and cause odor.
  • Wear clean, breathable clothes: Moisture-wicking fabrics help reduce sweat buildup and odor. Never re-wear yesterday’s gym gear.
  • Use deodorant or antiperspirant: Apply it before your workout. Antiperspirants help reduce sweating, while deodorants mask odor.

💪 During Your Workout

  • Bring a towel: Use it to wipe down equipment and your own sweat. It’s courteous and keeps bacteria at bay.
  • Wipe equipment before and after use: Most gyms provide disinfectant wipes—use them liberally.
  • Stay hydrated: Bring your own water bottle and avoid communal fountains.
  • Avoid touching your face: Especially after handling weights or machines.

🚿 Post-Workout Routine

  • Shower ASAP: Use antibacterial soap and focus on high-sweat areas like underarms, groin, and feet.
  • Change into fresh clothes: Don’t lounge in your gym gear—sweaty clothes are a breeding ground for bacteria.
  • Clean your gear: Wash your gym clothes, towel, and even your gym bag regularly.

👟 Bonus Tips

  • Keep a separate pair of gym shoes: This helps avoid tracking in bacteria from outside.
  • Use body wipes if you can’t shower right away: They’re a solid backup until you can rinse off properly.

Maintaining proper hygiene isn’t just about keeping odors at bay—it’s a reflection of discipline, self-respect, and respect for the community sharing the iron paradise with you. From wiping down benches to swapping sweaty gear for fresh threads, small habits go a long way in creating a positive gym experience for everyone. Next time you step into the weight room, show up clean, stay fresh, and leave a lasting impression for the right reasons.
