There was a time, not too long ago, when I could walk into any restaurant, order the most indulgent, deep-fried item on the menu, and polish it off without a second thought. Burgers dripping with sauce, fries so crispy they left a little glistening trail of oil on my fingers—that was my comfort zone. Grease and I, we were tight. But then, in an unexpected twist, I decided to try eating clean.
At first, it was just a little experiment—a detox week that morphed into a new way of life. Over time, I got hooked on how good my body felt. My energy spiked, my focus sharpened, and I lost that constant post-meal sluggishness. After a couple of years of this clean-eating business, my body had fully adapted to lean proteins, leafy greens, and unprocessed foods.
Then one night, I met up with some friends at a restaurant we used to frequent. I felt nostalgic, scanning the menu, and then I saw it: my old favorite—double cheeseburger with a side of seasoned fries. My inner clean-eating angel whispered, Are you sure about this? But my heart screamed, Go for it!
Within the first few bites, I was in greasy-food heaven. The flavors, the juicy burger, the crispy fries…it was like meeting an old friend! But then, not even 30 minutes later, that friend stabbed me in the back. My stomach gave me a fierce reminder that it no longer welcomed oily or overly rich foods into the club. It was like my digestive system hit the emergency brakes, going, Whoa, we don’t do this anymore!
Now, every time I forget and decide to order something indulgent, I’m quickly reminded why I gave it up in the first place. Even a little too much butter or oil in a dish, and my gut stages a full-blown protest. While my tastebuds still cheer for a good burger, my stomach has become a purist. It wants clean foods, not grease-laden memories.
So, here’s the irony of becoming a clean eater: while I thought I’d always have room for my old favorites, my body has other plans. And honestly? As much as I sometimes miss the occasional indulgence, I’d rather feel good than spend the evening wondering why I didn’t just order the grilled chicken salad.
